Invercargill police officer admits to killing his estranged wife

Invercargill police offcer Ben McLean has admitted that he shot and killed his wife Verity on Anzac Day, before waiting for her new partner to arrive and shooting him as well.

Fairfax media reports that McLean, 48, has today pleaded guilty in the High Court in Invercargill to murdering his wife using a .22-calibre rifle, as well as the attempted murder of one of his long-time friends Garry Duggan.

Police allege that McLean went in to a building on Otepuni Avenue in Invercargill where the pair were living and killed his wife with a gunshot to the head.

McLean had been a police officer since 2007.
