After Simon Bridges took out the latest leadership vote, the 1 NEWS political team look back at what happened at National's last contest, when Jim McLay took over from Robert Muldoon in 1984, following the party's election defeat.
Unfortunately for Mr McLay, he didn't make it to the next election, being rolled by Jim Bolger early in 1986.
How does that bode for Mr Bridges?
