Influenza identified as mystery illness that forced closure of West Coast school

August 2, 2019

Children travelling out of town during school holidays brought influenza back with them.

A mystery illness that forced the closure of a West Coast school for several days this week has been identified.

Five students at Westport North School have tested positive for influenza.

The Canterbury DHB says it's likely children who travelled out of town during the school holidays took the virus back to the school, forcing it to close when one-third of the roll were off sick on Tuesday.

The school is set to reopen today.

Three Kiwis have already died of influenza this season.
