Increased need for food parcels sees Christchurch City Mission in overdrive this Christmas

Demand for food parcels has surged almost 50 per cent in the city.

Demand for food parcels has surged almost 50 per cent in Christchurch and the City Mission says more double income households are needing help.

With just eight sleeps until Christmas, the holiday season is taking an early toll on families.

Dozens of volunteers working all day make the hand outs possible but there are still some key items that are needed says Matthew Mark from the Mission.

"We need more food, absolutely," he says.

"As we are heading into Christmas we would love to be able to spoil people, so if we can get pavs in, if we can get meats in – absolutely fantastic. But we still need the staples," he says.

Mr Mark says if everyone just put one extra item in their supermarket trolley this week, the City Mission might just hit their target of making everyone’s Christmas, a little bit more merry.
