Increase in drones causing headaches for air safety officials

December 21, 2017

With hundreds more in the air, a new app is being trialled to help keep pilots of all kinds safe.

The national air traffic control body is advising caution to rookie drone pilots this season, as new technology is being rolled out to try and help with the issue.

Thousands of new drones are expected to be unwrapped this Christmas, with Airways trialling a new app to help keep pilots informed.

The app, called Airmap, is being trialled in Canterbury and Queenstown and will let operators know where they can and can't fly.

It will also let them log flights and seek permission to use restricted airspace.

Individuals can face up to a $5,000 fine for breaching CAA regulations.

The app could be rolled out nationwide after the trial ends next year.
