'If you know anyone on the water, tell them to get out' - NIWA gives ominous warning to Auckland boaties over lightning threat

November 14, 2017

TVNZ weather presenter Dan Corbett with the latest update for Auckland.

Weather agencies are warning Aucklanders as a band of lightning storms looks set to impact the region this afternoon, with NIWA telling boaties to get out of the water altogether.

The warning comes as hail storms and heavy showers have already been reported in isolated parts of the city.

The activity is expected to pick up this afternoon with NIWA posting a tweet warning of dangerous thunderstorm activity just north of Auckland that may impact those on the water.

"Activity west of Whangaparaoa & Orewa. If you know anyone on the water, tell them to get out. You're the tallest thing on the water," the tweet reads.

MetService says their weather radar detected severe thunderstorms near Warkworth, Orewa, Puhoi and Ahuroa, and that they're moving north and could bring heavy rain and hail.

MetService also posted a tweet warning about isolated thunderstorms hitting the region which are expected to clear by tonight.
