A hunter was airlifted to Tauranga Hospital after falling 15 metres onto a rocky ledge yesterday.
Constable John Fredericksen said in a statement that ambulance, police and Whakatane LandSAR attempted to rescue the 52-year-old man at 4pm.
He was located in the Tarawera Forest, about 15km from Kawerau.
However the steep terrain meant he needed to be airlifted out at 11.40pm.
He is in a stable condition.
