A restricted fire season has been enforced across Canterbury and most of the lower North Island.

The restricted fire seasons means that a permit is required to light an open air fire.

Fire Risk Management Officer, Bruce Irvine says the Canterbury restrictions apply to Christchurch, Selwyn, North Canterbury an Banks Peninsula.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand has also released a statement as this applies to most of the Lower North Island.

Mr Irvine said although it is restricted at the moment, with tinder-dry conditions it could become permanent and that is unusual to have these restrictions in place so early on in the summer.

He is urging people to go to www.checkitsalright.nz to see what the fire status is for their area.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand regional manager Rachel Thorp said this year is shaping up to be much drier than previous years.

"With the La Nina conditions forecast, it is only going to get hotter and drier."
