Horn-happy motorists beware: Wellington councillor aims to ban 'really annoying' toots in Mt Vic tunnel

January 29, 2019

The Wellington City councillor has started a campaign to get notices put up encouraging people to refrain from tooting.

A Wellington city councillor wants the NZ Transport Agency to ban horn-happy drivers from honking in the Mount Victoria tunnel.

Councillor Chris Calvi-Freeman, who is leading the campaign, says the honking is simply "really annoying".

"We want to encourage people to walk to work, cycle to work," he explained. "Why make life difficult for walkers and cyclists?

"Lots of things are fun for some people and not for others."

Motorists have been honking in the tunnel, mainly on the weekends, since 1931 when it was built, Mr Calvi-Freeman said.

He wanted to encourage people to refrain from honking by using a friendly notice at the ends of the tunnel.

It is already illegal for people to honk in a non-emergency.
