Man charged with murder in South Auckland, one day after corpse discovered

A homicide investigation was launched after the discovery of a man's body in the Auckland suburb last night.

A man has been charged with murder following the discovery yesterday evening of a corpse in South Auckland.

The suspect, 44, is set to appear in Manukau District Court today. 

Police were called to the scene on Otara Road, in Otara, at 6.50pm yesterday. There they found the body of the 62-year-old victim. 

Detective Senior Sergeant Warrick Adkin said yesterday that one person was "assisting police with inquiries".

"We are working to understand the full circumstances of the death," he said at the time. 

Police said today that it is believed the two men knew each other. No other suspects are being sought, they said.

There was a heavy police presence outside St John the Evangelist Catholic Parish following yesterday's gruesome discovery, a witness told 1 NEWS.

Part of the road had been blocked off and a cordon had been put in place.
