Homes evacuated as suspected tank shell unearthed at Te Puke property

Police have been called to a property in Te Puke following what 1 NEWS understands to be the discovering of a live tank shell.

1 NEWS was told the shell was unearthed by a man on digger.

Police say they were called to the vacant property around 4.15pm and neighbouring properties have been evacuated.

A police spokesperson confirmed to 1 NEWS that an "item" has been found at the site in Te Puke that needs to be carefully disposed of.

The New Zealand Defence Force has been notified and is on the way to the scene from Auckland.
