The holiest month on the Muslim calendar is getting underway around the world tonight
The focus here in New Zealand has been on security around mosques, with police standing guard at many.
In just over a week, thousands of Muslims nationwide will head to their local mosque to pray.
Ramadan traditionally begins with the first sighting of the new crescent moon during the ninth month of the Islamic calendar.
This year, it began on Monday, May 6 and will end on Wednesday, June 5.
