To Tokoroa's Tommy Edgar, being a volunteer doesn't mean you can just turn up when you feel like it.
"You're either in or you're out."
For 25 years, Tommy has been keeping the kids of Tokoroa safe by helping at a busy road crossing.
"He lights up our day," one youngster said.
He also gives his time at a rest home, something that is personal for the devoted family man.
"My wife died with dignity, and that was thanks to the people here," he told Seven Sharp.
Tommy was nominated for ASB's Good as Gold by Lynette Mudge, who says he the most special person she knows.
"He would give his shirt off his back for anyone," she said.
"He's a giver, not a taker, I haven't come across someone as special as he is."
