A dog alerted the occupants of a house to the fact their house was on fire after someone allegedly lit the fire deliberately.

Police say a fire broke out at a property in Mataura, Southland, in the Argyle/Kana Street area about 1am on Friday morning.

The house was occupied, and the occupant's dog alerted them to the fire.

They were able to put the fire out in its early stages, and police say if they hadn't been woken, the outcome could have been "significantly worse".

Police are wanting to speak to anyone who may have seen or heard anything that night.

They can be contacted on 03 203 9300, or information can be given anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
