A Paeroa woman has become an invaluable member of the St John family, after a personal tragedy led to her focusing on healing others.
Jackie Thorne lost her 13-year-old son Ben 20 years ago after he died while undergoing a routine operation on an infected knee.
A specialist was charged with manslaughter over the incident but was later acquitted.
Ms Thorne then fought for another five years for accountability, something she says she never got from the system.
"It helps me heal by helping other people, that's what St John has done for me," Ms Thorne told Seven Sharp.
She certainly helps St John as well, not only is she on the front lines as an ambulance officer, but also runs a charity shop which helps to fund the organisation.
Asked if she has any advice to others looking to lend a hand, Ms Thorne said: "Get out there and be passionate about what you believe in."
