Heavy snow closes North Island's Desert Road

State Highway 1 between Waiouru and Rangipo is affected.

The Desert Road in the central North Island is closed again this morning due to heavy snow.

State Highway One between Waiouru and Rangipo is affected. A detour is in place via State Highway 49.

NZTA advise motorists to plan ahead and take extra care while travelling.

The Taihape to Napier road also remains closed.
