Heavy rain, strong winds in store for southern, central NZ

Forecasts of heavy rain and strong wind has triggered a severe weather warning for parts of the country.

In a statement this morning, MetService said an active front, preceded by strong northwesterlies, is expected to move northeast onto the lower South Island this evening and then the rest of the South Island and lower North Island tomorrow morning.

"This front is forecast to bring a period of heavy rain to the west of the South Island including the headwaters of the Otago and Canterbury lakes and rivers," MetService warned.

Heavy rain warnings are in place for the ranges of Westland south of Otira, with up to 130mm of rain forecast, the headwaters of the Canterbury lakes and rivers south of Arthur's Pass, with up to 110mm expected, the headwaters of the Otago lakes and rivers, with up to 100mm, and Fiordland with up to 90mm of rain forecast.

"Heavy rain may cause streams and rivers to rise rapidly. Surface flooding and slips are also possible and driving conditions may be hazardous," MetService said.

Meanwhile, MetService also said "severe gale northwesterlies are expected to affect southern and eastern parts of the South Island, and possibly Wellington and Wairarapa".

Strong wind warnings are in place for Canterbury High Country, with gusts forecast up to 130km/h, and Southern Lakes, Central Otago, Clutha and inland Dunedin, Fiordland, Southland and Stewart Island, with gust up to 120km/h.

"Strong wind gusts could damage trees, powerlines and unsecured structures. Driving may be hazardous, especially for high-sided vehicles and motorcycles," MetService warned.
