Tropical cyclone Oma is not expected to wreak havoc across the country but severe weather has been forecast to sweep through parts of central New Zealand, MetService confirmed today.
In a Facebook post, the national weather service said, "Way back on Monday it looked like there was a chance that Cyclone Oma might head our way. However, by Tuesday it was looking very unlikely and by Wednesday we had ruled out that possibility all together".
"In fact, the main feature of this weekend's weather is the colder air sweeping over the country tomorrow, bringing rain and strong winds to some places."
A severe weather watch has been issued for parts of central New Zealand as an active trough is forecast to move northwards through Canterbury, Marlborough, the Wairarapa and Hawke's Bay overnight tonight and Sunday, bringing with it a period of heavy rain and possible thunderstorms.
Meanwhile, a severe weather warning is in place for the Kaikoura Coast and Ranges, MetService said, with heavy rain and possible thunderstorms expected for the region.
