Fire and Emergency is responding to calls of flooding in New Plymouth this morning.

The central region's shift manager Carlos Dempsey says calls started coming in just before 8.30am, following a bout of heavy rain.

Rainfall gauges operated by Taranaki Regional Council said 72mm of rain has fallen this morning.

Mr Dempsey says seven or eight buildings now have water inside, with the majority of the flooding centred in the CBD.

He said firefighters will help clear drains and protect buildings.
