Heavy rain to blast most of North Island through tonight; Wellington battered by severe gales

April 1, 2019

Periods of heavy rain are expected across most of the North Island today and tomorrow, with severe northerly gales slated for Wellington.

It comes as an active front over central New Zealand continues to move northeastwards across the country today and tomorrow morning, MetService said.

The national meteorological service has issued heavy rain warnings for the Bay of Plenty east of Opotiki and the Gisborne ranges, Mount Taranaki and the Tararua Ranges.

During this time, heavy rain may cause streams and rivers to rise rapidly, and surface flooding and slips are also possible.

A strong wind warning has been issued for Wellington, including Remutaka Hill Road, which has been forecast to see severe north to northwest gales gusting 120km/h in exposed areas.

The strong wind warning will remain in place until 1pm today.

Driving may be hazardous during this time, especially for high-sided vehicles and motorcycles, the national meteorological service said.
