Have you got your Kiwi-made Pineapple Lumps yet? Cadbury's Dunedin factory into its last week of making the iconic Kiwi treat

March 20, 2018
Dunedin city councillor Jim O’Malley, who organised the bid, says $20 million is needed to save the factory.

The Cadbury factory in Dunedin will formally close down this week, after finishing a final run of Pineapple Lumps.

Mondelez, which owns Cadbury, announced in October last year that the manufacturing would be moved to Australia, as about 70 per cent of the product was exported there.

The company then undertook a search for someone to take over the production in New Zealand, but no suitable party could be found.

About 30 people are still working at the factory that creates Pineapple Lumps this week, while a further 100 are working on decommissioning the site, NZ Herald reports.

The factory, in the heart of Dunedin, is now listed for sale with real estate partners CBRE.

A Mondelez spokesperson told NZ Herald: "We're confident anyone interested in purchasing a once-in-a-generation landmark city block in the heart of Dunedin's tourist precinct will have some really exciting plans for its development".

Pineapple Lumps will still be made in Australia, and will be imported to New Zealand.
