Hard road ahead as total overhaul of racing industry planned

September 28, 2018

Racing Minister Winston Peters met with some tough questions today.

The harness racing industry met on Friday following last month's raids on properties around the country that saw 11 harness racing figures being arrested and charged.

Harness racing New Zealand chief executive Edward Renell says the industry’s integrity systems do work.

"They've identified the issue and they are addressing it I think we just need to give the time to go through this and then evaluate it."

The Messara report recommends sweeping changes to the industry.

This includes closing some regional racetracks, outsourcing the TAB, and a racing board restructure.

The Racing Board head urged players to make sure it was the right deal.

John Allen, the Racing Board CEO says, "If you’re going to do it, examine it carefully".

Racing Minister Winston Peters wasn't pulling punches,

"We're not here to make friends, so to speak, we're here to get the darned job done.

"I want them to wake up and smell the coffee."

Consultation on the Messara report closes in mid-October.

But, Mr Peters plans to take a plan to Cabinet before then.

"The papers aren't based on consultation, they are based on the pathway forward."

The minister says most of the feedback has been positive, but not all.

"It's the usual parochial provincial attitude, it's everybody else's fault but theirs," Mr Peters says.

Thoroughbred, harness and greyhound racing will present their combined views to Mr Peters in the next few weeks.
