A man has had a narrow escape following a gyrocopter accident at Blaketown in Greymouth this afternoon.
Police say the gyrocopter was taking off from Greymouth Airport just after 4pm but immediately got into difficulty, crashing on the adjoining beach.
A St John ambulance unit was sent to the incident and the pilot was treated at the scene for a minor hand injury.
He was not taken to hospital.
