Green Party co-leader James Shaw has been attacked on his way to work in Wellington this morning.

He was allegedly grabbed and then struck in the face at 7.50am outside the Botanic Gardens entrance on Glenmore St.

Mr Shaw was hit in the face as he walked to work in the capital today.

Police confirmed a 47-year-old man has been arrested.

1 NEWS understands the Green Party believe the attack may have been targeted towards Mr Shaw, rather than a random incident.

Two members of the public assisted Mr Shaw and an ambulance assessed him at the scene.

He made his way to work but is now in hospital where he is being checked on.

The attack happened as he walked his regular route to Parliament.

Jacinda Ardern says she has spoken to Mr Shaw who is doing well.

She says it’s an “unprovoked and surprising thing to happen that has caught him off-guard”.

“We have an environment in New Zealand where politicians are accessible, where Minister are accessible but we just cannot take that for granted”.
