Green MP Julie Anne Genter has given birth to a baby boy at Auckland Hospital.

Genter announced the safe arrival of her son via social media on Tuesday night.

Her son was born at 6.03pm on August 21, weighing almost 4.3 kilograms.

Genter said in a post on Facebook, she and her partner Peter Nunns were "overjoyed" to announce the arrival of their child.

"We waited a very long time for labour to start but when it did it was short and sharp," she said in the post.

She expressed gratitude to the staff at the Auckland Hospital and her midwife for their care and support.

On Sunday, Genter cycled to the hospital to induce labour.

She will take three months' leave from her Ministerial duties.

She is the second politician to give birth this term, after Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern welcomed baby Neve in June.
