Govt announces purchase of 'prime urban land' at Unitec site in Auckland, for thousands of new homes

The Housing Minister announced it on Q+A this morning.

Housing Minister Phil Twyford announced on TVNZ1's Q+A this morning the government has bought 29 hectares of "prime urban land" in Auckland to begin Kiwibuild's first major development.

It is located at the Unitec site in Mt Albert.

Corin Dann questions Phil Twyford on Labour’s housing policy.

"It's going to be the site of an exciting new urban development project that will see between 3,000-4,000 new homes there," Mr Twyford told host Corin Dann.

He hoped about 30-40 per cent of homes would be KiwiBuild "for young Kiwi families". Mr Dann asked if that would amount to about 1,000, which Mr Twyford said, "probabbly a bit more than that".

Mr Twyford hoped the new build would also include state housing.

In a press release today, Mr Twyford said it would be a "mix of affordable KiwiBuild homes for first home buyers, public housing and open market houses".

"This new community will have open spaces, new parks and shops."
