Government pulls plug on many phone help lines

The Government is doing away with using individual telephone support services that offer help on problem gambling, drug and alcohol addictions and quitting smoking.

It's instead decided to fund a single national Tele-health provider, Homecare Medical.

It will integrate, Healthline, Poisonline, Quitline, Gambling Helpline, Alcohol and Drug Helpline and the National Depression Initiative.

The Government says the new service will be available 24 hours a day seven days a week, and will provide better access to high quality, consistent advice across the country.

Some of those providers spoken to by ONE News today confirmed that it would mean the end of their Government contracts and amount to job losses.

However they said they were working with the new provider and remained hopeful Homecare Medical would be able to absorb some of their trained advisers.
