Government injects $22 million into workplace injury prevention

January 10, 2019
Workplace Relations Minister Iain Lees-Galloway says too many people are missing out on the successes of a productive economy.

ACC are investing $22 million into workplace injury prevention, in an attempt to decrease New Zealand's high work-related injury rate. More than 200,000 ACC work-related injury claims were lodged in 2017.

ACC Minister Iain Lees-Galloway said the grants and subsidies for small and medium businesses were designed to go towards training, equipment or advisory services.

"This is particularly important for smaller businesses which haven't previously been able to access this type of support because the barriers have been too high," he said.

"While New Zealand workplaces have made progress since Pike River, it’s clear we have some way to go to achieve real, sustainable change.

Agriculture, construction, forestry, manufacturing, healthcare and social assistance represent 52 per cent of severe workplace injuries in New Zealand, with 231,651 ACC work-related injury claims lodged in 2017.
