Government hints it may scrap NCEA fees for high school children

The Education Minister says he is looking into the issue.

The Government's hinting NCEA fees for high school students may be scrapped.

Students owed $1.4 million in unpaid fees last year - meaning thousands have had their NCEA marks withheld.

The Education Minister says he's looking into the issue, but there are competing interests when it comes to funding.

"We're going to be looking very closely at whether we can implement the recommendations of the review panel which was that we should abolish the fees and if so how quickly we can do that.

"Of course, there's a lot of competing demands on the Government funding at the moment," Chris Hipkins said.

National’s Nikki Kaye thinks the Government is under pressure on the issue.

"This Government's raised huge expectation around education being free so people will be expecting Labour to scrap the fees in this area,"Ms Kaye said.
