He’s aiming to be on air for 107 hours and 28 minutes.

A Gore DJ who runs his own radio station has broken the New Zealand record for longest radio broadcast after spending 107 hours and 28 minutes on the air.

Cave FM's Bob "Caveman" McKenzie, known in the region for his crazy on-air antics, began the broadcast on Saturday morning, and finished just as TVNZ1's Seven Sharp prepared to wrap up their show at 7.28pm today. Seven Sharp interviewed McKenzie live on the show.

"When you've been as awake as long as I have, the -- the mind, I must admit, is slightly fuddled," Mr McKenzie said.

"It's uh, I'm having... What's happened, Hillary, I've had people in here and I've been talking to them, like, this afternoon, and I've been nodding off mid-conversation. That's how things are at the moment."

The lack of sleep was "very similar" to being drunk, he said.

"I've never suffered from sleep deprivation before, but I am now, and I'm going to go have a couple of stubbies when I finish here, and I believe I will probably go to sleep reasonably quickly."

McKenzie is still more than 24 hours off from the world record, which was set at 205 hours, 2 minutes and 54 seconds.
