Girl Guide biscuits in final sale as fundraiser wraps up after six decades

March 30, 2019

Some regions have already sold out as some fans stockpile the iconic cookie.

They were a Kiwi institution, but Girl Guide biscuits have gone on sale for the final time this weekend.

After more than six decades of fundraising, the last packets and boxes are being snapped up across the country.

Whether you like yours plain, with chocolate or just the mini packs, you’d better get is quick as girls around the country do a last push of the final packs.

Girl Guiding New Zealand Chief Executive, Susan Colman is nostalgic as the final weekend rolls around.

"There is an element of sadness however particularly for those that have been heavily involved over the years, they are really pleased to be able to move on and focus on the true values of guiding in our programmes."

Girl Guide Leader, Cynthia Landels has been involved with Girl Guides for 67 years, and always saw the value of the fundraiser.

"I think it taught them a lot of skills, approaching strangers, learning to ask politely, learning to accept the fact that someone didn't want your biscuits without stamping your feet, handling money and giving the correct money and giving the correct change," she told 1 News.

The organisation has been selling them for more than 60 years.

Now the organisation will have to look at new ways of raising hundreds of thousands of dollars.

As it wraps up production, some volunteers are tucking away a stash for the future, ensuring while it may be the end of an era, there's always a way of making sure it's not over.
