September 30, 2018

NZ's first transsexual MP will be the first person of Māori decent to speak at Oxford University's famous debating society.

Georgina Beyer, New Zealand's first transsexual MP, says she's humbled to have been asked to speak at Oxford University's famous debating society, the Oxford Union.

Next month, the 60-year-old will become the first person of Māori decent and only the fourth New Zealander to speak there, following in the famous footsteps of the late David Lange.

The former politician says she hopes to raise awareness of the LGBT community.

“It’ll be wonderful to talk about how in our country we have been able to move forward on these issues so that someone like myself can achieve as I have."

A fundraising event for the UK trip was held in Wellington on Sunday.
