The hospital ward where a stabbed gang member is recovering has a police guard who will remain in place until the patient is discharged.
South Canterbury's DHB says the patient, who is in a serious condition, is the only one on the ward and security staff and police are monitoring who can come onto it.
It's likely to be this way until early next week.
The other gang member involved in the four-person stabbing in the early hours of yesterday morning is likely to be discharged today or tomorrow, police say.
The gang members were seen fighting in Dunkirk Street in Timaru about 3.15am yesterday.
Police are continuing their enquiries and would like to hear from anyone who saw or heard anything in the area.
