Winston Peters ends National's nine year reign as Government in sensational fashion.

National leader Bill English has wished incoming Prime Minister-elect Jacinda Ardern all the best, telling her to "take the job seriously, but not herself too seriously".

The now former prime minister graciously accepted NZ First's and Winston Peters' decision to go with the left-bloc tonight, while flanked by wife Mary and senior national figures.

Despite losing the top job, Mr English was happy to offer his replacement some advice.

Winston Peters has thrown his support behind a Labour-led government with Jacinda Ardern as PM.

The PM-elect will discuss how NZ's new government may look in the coming days.
