Two children per adult can jump on over Queens Birthday weekend without paying, before the service stops on June 7 for a $3 million, eight week upgrade.
Wellington Cable Car chief executive Simon Fleisher says it's a great opportunity for families to come through and they have their fingers crossed for a busy weekend.
"This is our way of giving back to our regular users," he said.
The Cable Car will reopen after July 31, with new equipment that will keep them going another 30 years.
Mr Fleisher says this is the first upgrade since 1979 and it is a full renovation, including everything from the technology to inside the carriages.
A temporary bus route will operate during the shutdown to serve those who use the Cable Car service.
