Forty-six days without rain in Christchurch sees 63-year record for consecutive dry days broken

Councils around NZ are keeping an eye on water supplies, as a long-standing record tumbles in Christchurch.

Christchurch has broken a record with 46 consecutive days without rain.

It breaks the previous record of 45 dry days way back in 1954.

MetService meteorologist Andy Best says the reading was taken at 9am, at Christchurch Airport, and no rain was detected at all.

He says while it's interesting to break a record "I empathise with the farming community, that's the main concern for the area, and many other rural areas this summer".

He says Wellington is on the verge of creating a similar record.
