Millions more will be spent by New Zealand's forestry agency to tackle regional erosion, officials announced today.

The $36 million injection will go to mainly to tree planting as a treatment.

Julie Collins of Te Uru Rākau said there had been 12 applications from councils in the latest round of funding.

"It shows the importance they are placing on sustainable land management and treating erosion in their regions," she said. "The loss of productive land through erosion has a significant impact on the environment and the sustainability of New Zealand land."

Hill country erosion is estimated to cost $100-150 million a year through the loss of soil, nutrients and production, as well as due to damaged infrastructure and waterways.

The funding allocations were hoped to have an outcome of more than 13 million trees being planted, as well as the treatment of more than 21,000 hectares of land.
