Flashback: Trevor Mallard makes 'let's take this outside' motion to Tau Henare before 2007 fisticuffs

November 7, 2017

Bill English referenced the new Speaker's rough and tumble past in Parliament today.

When Bill English referenced new Speaker Trevor Mallard's robust debating style in Parliament today, he was most likely referring to his 2007 dust-up with Tau Henare which happened in a corridor just outside the debating chamber.

The two men came to blows after a personal exchange saw then National MP Tau Henare goading Labour's Trevor Mallard over the fact he had recently separated from his wife.

Mr Mallard made the traditional "let's take this outside" hand motion before the two stepped into an adjacent corridor where they came to blows.

Mr Henare can then be seen in 1 NEWS' unearthed video of the incident, returning into the chamber to tell his colleagues all about the fisticuffs that had just taken place.

Mr Mallard will be hoping for a more sedate time in charge now he's Speaker of the House.
