It's taken three years and $220 million, measures 32,000 square metres over three floors with the footprint of two rugby fields.

Today staff and the public were given a sneak peek of the hospital, which has been purpose-built to meet the needs of New Zealand's ageing population.

There is an extensive new radiology unit, along with an outpatient clinic catering to 90,000 patients per year and three new wards to house 230 patients.

The first patients will move in on June 13.
