It's the first time the two have met.

The pair look relaxed and happy as they met at Auckland's Government House this afternoon.

It is the first time they have met and judging by the pictures it was an enjoyable meeting.

Addressing media after the meeting Ms Ardern said they discussed the issue of climate change and her new government's agenda in New Zealand.

Obama told Ms Ardern the powhiri he received in Auckland today was a real highlight of his trip and he is especially happy with the carved whalebone necklace he was given.

They were also joined by The Rt Hon Dame Patsy Reddy, Governor General of New Zealand.
