October 21, 2017

The wildfire near Te Anau has now grown to more than 1100 hectares.

Fire fighter crews and helicopters were dispatched early this morning to fight a huge out of control fire in Southland.

Since being called to the scene of the fire near Te Anau at around 2:30pm yesterday afternoon, it has burnt through over 1,000 hectares.

It started as a controlled burnout at a farm near Mount Prospect but quickly spread in the hot dry conditions with the assistance of strong winds.

Fire and emergency say that the fire is not endangering any homes or infrastructure at this stage.
