Fire engines on the scene after fire breaks out in chicken shed with poultry inside

Six fire engines have been called to the scene following a chicken shed fire with poultry still inside in Whanganui early this morning.

The fire broke out in the 150-metre by 20-metre shed on Papaiti Road about 12.45am, a Fire and Emergency spokesperson told 1 NEWS.

Fire services are working to dampen down hotspots at this stage. The roof of the structure has since collapsed.

It's believed there were more chicken sheds on the property but no others were at risk.
