Fire trucks line the road near the house fire in Auckland's Kingsland.

A large house fire in the Auckland suburb of Kingsland has been extinguished after 30 firefighters helped tackle the blaze this afternoon.

Seven appliances, along with two aerial appliances and 30 firefighters, were called to fight the fire, which began at a house on New North Road around 3.54pm.

New North Road was closed between Morningside Road and Kingsland Ave, but with buses being guided through, Auckland Transport said in a tweet.

Auckland Central Fire Commander Vaughan Mackereth said commercial supplies were stored in the basement of the three-storied old wooden house.

These materials were the cause of thick smoke billowing from the property.

The fire started in the basement, Mr Mackereth said.

Two fire trucks remain at the scene this evening, and fire crews will be on standby overnight.
