A fire has led to the closure of State Highway 7 (the Lewis Pass) near Hanmer Springs in Canterbury this afternoon.
The NZ Transport Agency says the fire is at Engineers Camp just south of Springs Junction.
Fire and Emergency NZ says the fire, which was believed to be 150 metres long with flames as high as 30 metres, has now been contained.
There are currently five fire engines and two helicopters at the scene.
The road remains closed and motorists are advised to avoid the area.
