Auckland City Hospital was placed in lockdown this afternoon when a prisoner receiving treatment went missing.

Corrections says it is working with police to assist them to locate a female prisoner who absconded while receiving ongoing treatment for a serious health condition at Auckland City Hospital.

The prisoner, who is on remand for drug offences, had been escorted by corrections officers from Auckland Region Women’s Corrections Facility, a corrections spokesperson said.

The hospital activated security procedures designed to protect the safety of staff, patients and visitors, including limiting access to the hospital, and an increased security presence, a hospital spokesperson said in a statement.

The hospital is open for patients and visitors.

A full investigation will be held into the incident, corrections said.

Cheri Maki posted on Facebook: "First beautiful day in a while and it’s all on. At starship with my biggie... and the hospital is on lockdown. Escaped prisoner on the loose."

Earlier today, firefighters were called to Auckland's Starship after a child became stuck in a ceiling.
