Health issues have seen BJ Smith and his family take a step back, but they won’t be giving up the surf.

A family surf shop business is shutting its doors in New Plymouth, after serving Taranaki surfers for 30 years.

Owner BJ Smith's children have grown up on the shop floor, eventually moving to the other side of the counter.

However, recent health issues have led to the Smith family making the tough choice to shut up shop.

BJ's son Jessie has recently been to France for treatment for his epilepsy which is thought will get worse before it gets better.

BJ himself has just won a battle with throat cancer that has left him wiped out.

Despite all this, the family has a positive outlook on life.
