Eyewitness video shows flames leaping in the air inside busy Auckland Countdown

Staff could be heard telling customers to evacuate the store.

A fire has broken out at a Countdown supermarket in Henderson, Auckland this evening.

Eyewitness video supplied to 1 NEWS shows flames licking the ceiling in an aisle of the Catherine Street store. 

Countdown staff can be seen and heard directing customers to leave the store.

Police told 1 NEWS the fire was arson and spread quickly in the supermarket.

Fire and Emergency NZ spokesman Paul Raddin said 60 firefighters were at the scene. 

Countdown has declined to comment to 1 NEWS.
