Expert says Kiwi children aren't protected from online abuse

A former United Kingdom detective chief inspector says New Zealand needs to do more to protect Kiwi children from online abuse.

Ian Tyler used to lead an international team of top cops hunting down internet sex offenders around the globe - now he is part of a New Zealand online child abuse team.

The modest team of six people was set up in 2010, but there are doubts the small number of dedicated staff is anywhere near enough.

Mr Tyler says New Zealand needs a national child protection agency with internal affairs, customs and other non-governmental agencies working against online child abuse from one location.

"It just makes sense to bring all these agencies under one roof," he says.
