Owner of Christchurch's Gun City thinks he knows where alleged mosque shooter bought semi-automatic rifle

David Tipple says he sold the shooter weapons, but not the military-style semi-automatics he used at the mosque.

The owner of Christchurch's Gun City has told 1 NEWS he believes he knows where the semi-automatic rifle used in the Christchurch mosque attack came from.

David Tipple has acknowledged he sold the alleged gunman several weapons, but not the controversial military-style rifle.

In an exclusive interview today, he says he might have the answer as to where it was purchased.

"I did speak to a dealer in the North Island who thought that the gun depicted was one that that customer had bought from him.

"But we won't be able to confirm it until we know the serial number," Mr Tipple said.

He also confirmed that Gun City has sold out of semi-automatic rifles but said that's not unusual for the store.

"It's a regular thing to sell out of AR15s."

The country's largest gun dealer has acknowledged weakness in our gun laws.

"There's no doubt it was too easy for him to convert an A-Cat firearm to E-Category," Mr Tipple said.

Jacinda Ardern would not announce the changes however, as "some detail" needs to be worked through.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has said the details of new gun laws will be revealed "within 10 days" of the Christchurch attack.
