A Christchurch couple has urged their community to reach out to each other in the wake of twin terror attacks at two mosques left 49 people dead.

Wendy and Avery Johnson spoke with 1 NEWS.

The couple gathered flowers and a silver fern from their garden to pay tribute to the families affected by the tragic event.

"Our hearts are just breaking for them. It’s just so said and it shouldn’t happen in our country," Ms Johnson said, adding "They should be safe to pray".

She heard the news on the attacks on the radio and says, "I just really feel for our Muslim community".

"Everyone should feel safe to pray whenever they want.

"We need to be reaching out to each other.

"There’s no tolerance for this in our society."
